Tang poetry is a famous style from China. It comes from the Tang dynasty, which lasted from 618 to 907. This era is often called the Golden Age of Chinese poetry.

Poetry was a major part of social life for people at all levels. Scholars had to master it to pass civil service exams. However, the art was meant to be available to everyone. This deep love for writing created a huge record of many authors.

A common form used during this time was called shi. These poems were made of rhyming couplets. There was no strict limit on the number of lines. Still, poets often preferred using multiples of four lines.

Poets often chose lines with five sounds. Later, lines with seven sounds became very popular. This gave the poems a special rhythm and flow.

The history of this poetry is very long and deep. Tang poets learned from traditions that were over a thousand years old. They were influenced by older works like the Shijing.

The era is often split into four parts. These are Early Tang, High Tang, Middle Tang, and Late Tang. Some people say the High Tang was the best time. This was when the poetry reached its highest quality.

There are many amazing facts about these collections. The Complete Tang Poems includes over 48,900 poems. These were written by more than 2,200 different authors.

Two of the most famous poets were Li Bai and Du Fu. Sadly, many poems were lost when the capital city, Changan, was damaged by war. Even so, a huge amount of work still survives today.

You can see how this poetry connects to other arts. For example, many poets were also famous painters. The poet Wang Wei was a well-known artist. Some poets were even famous for their beautiful handwriting, or calligraphy.
