Li He was a very dedicated and hardworking writer. He did not just sit at a desk all day. Instead, he went on journeys during the daylight hours. He carried an old brocade bag with him everywhere he went. Whenever a beautiful line of poetry came to his mind, he would jot it down. He would save these notes in his bag to use later. When he returned home in the evening, he would arrange those lines into full poems.

Li He faced a big setback in his career at age 20. He wanted to take the important Imperial Examination for government jobs. However, he was forbidden from taking the test due to a naming taboo. A name in his father's given name sounded too much like the name of the degree. Some people believe his rivals used this rule to stop him. This happened because they were jealous of his great skill. He only served three years in a low-ranking office before returning home.
