Yuan Zhen was a famous writer and leader in China. He lived during the middle Tang dynasty. He was a gifted novelist, poet, and politician. People remember him most for his prose work called Yingying's Biography. This story was so popular that people turned it into music and plays.

He was also a member of the "New Yuefu" poets. This group used their poems to express ideas or protest. Their writing was often subtle so they would not face trouble. His poems were included in many famous collections of verse. He even wrote about far-away places like Liangzhou.

Yuan's journey to success began with his mother, Lady Zheng. His father died when Yuan was only seven years old. Because the family was poor, his mother taught him at home. She was a very intelligent woman. Yuan learned to write by age eight. By age 14, he passed a big test on two Confucian classics.

At age 23, he worked as a copyeditor at the Palace Library. Later, he passed a special imperial exam for strategic thinking. He ranked first in a group of 18 students. This group included his famous friend, Bai Juyi.

As a government official, Yuan was known for being outspoken. He gave many suggestions to Emperor Xianzong. He even wrote about how to defend the borders. However, some leaders were jealous of his success. They sent him away from the capital, Chang'an, to serve in other places.

While he was in Jiangling, he wrote many famous poems. People called his style the "Yuanhe Style" after the Emperor's era. Even when he was far away, his work remained very popular. Many people in the Yangtze River region studied his writing.

Yuan's life was filled with many important people and events. He was a descendant of the Northern Wei imperial family. His ancestors even served in the Sui and Tang dynasties. He had a very close friendship with the poet Bai Juyi. The two friends made a "Green Mountain pact." They promised to retire together as Taoist recluses once they had enough money.

They often wrote long poems to each other from different cities. These poems could be 50 or even 100 lines long.

In his later years, Yuan returned to the capital. Emperor Muzong promoted him to help draft imperial edicts. This was an unusual promotion, so some colleagues looked down on him. He was also involved in a big disagreement about fairness in exams. This event helped start the Niu-Li factional struggles.

These struggles lasted for about 40 years. Yuan Zhen died on September 2, 831. He left behind a legacy of beautiful words and a life of service.
