Sima Guang was a very important leader and writer in China. He lived during the Song dynasty. He was a scholar-official, which means he was a highly educated person who worked for the government.

Sima Guang is most famous for writing a huge history book. This book is called the Zizhi Tongjian. He wanted to use history to help leaders make good choices. His ideas about how to run a country lasted for a long time.

As a young boy, Sima Guang was very brave and calm. One famous story says a playmate fell into a huge vat of water. While other children ran away in fear, Sima did not panic. He picked up a heavy rock and smashed a hole in the bottom of the pot. The water leaked out, and his friend was saved from drowning.

This story shows how he could think clearly during a hard job.

Sima Guang grew up to be a very successful student. At only twenty years old, he passed the Imperial examination with the highest rank. This allowed him to work in many important government offices. He worked for several different emperors, including Emperor Renzong and Emperor Shenzong.

He spent many years learning how the government worked. He used his knowledge to write many reports for the leaders of China.

In his work, Sima Guang often disagreed with another official named Wang Anshi. Wang Anshi wanted to start many New Policies to change the country. Sima Guang thought these changes were bad for the people. He believed the government should not compete with merchants or take too much money from farmers.

He thought a country stayed strong when things were steady and simple. Because of these disagreements, Sima Guang retired to a place called Luoyang for many years.

While he was retired, Sima Guang worked very hard on his writing. In 1084, he finished the Zizhi Tongjian and gave it to Emperor Shenzong. Later, he returned to the capital city of Kaifeng to lead the government again. He helped remove many of the New Policies that he disliked. He also helped end the Baojia system, which was a way to train millions of men for defense. Sima Guang died in 1086, leaving behind a great legacy of history and thought.
