As a young boy, Sima Guang was very clever. One day, a friend fell into a huge pot of water. Sima did not panic. He hit the pot with a rock. The water leaked out, and his friend was safe.

Sima loved to read. He grew up to be a high official. He worked for many emperors. He had strong ideas about how to run a country. He did not like new laws made by Wang Anshi. Sima thought these laws were bad for farmers. He wanted the government to stay simple and steady.

Sima retired for a while to study. During this time, he wrote a massive history book. It is called the Zizhi Tongjian. He gave it to the emperor in 1084. Later, he returned to lead the government again. He helped remove many of the old new laws. He wanted to bring order back to his land.
