Most old history books used a biographical style. That style focused on lists of leaders and officials. Sima Guang chose a chronological style instead. This means the stories follow a strict timeline. He wanted the history to flow year by year. This way, it is easier to see how one event leads to another. He also added two extra sections for extra help. These sections include tables and a critical analysis.

Making this book was a huge task for a team of people.
