Feng Youlan was a very important Chinese philosopher and historian. He spent his life studying big ideas about how the world works. He was also a famous writer and a teacher. His work helped many people learn about Chinese thought in the modern era. People in the West often knew him by the name Fung Yu-lan. He wanted to show how old Chinese ideas fit with new ways of thinking.

Feng used many different ways to study the world. He looked at both Western and Chinese philosophy. In 1939, he created a new system called New Rational Philosophy. This idea used old concepts like "li" and "tao" from earlier thinkers. He studied these ideas using Western logic to make them new. He also wrote about how people develop their own sense of right and wrong.

Feng was born on December 4, 1895, in Tanghe County, China. He grew up in a middle-class family. His sister, Feng Yuanjun, became a famous writer too. Feng studied at several schools in China like Peking University. In 1919, he went to the United States to study at Columbia University. He earned his PhD there in 1923. His big thesis was about different ideals in life.

He held many important jobs during his long career. From 1934 to 1938, he was the Chair of Philosophy at Tsinghua University. While there, he wrote his most famous book in 1934. It was called "A History of Chinese Philosophy." This book was very big and had two volumes. He also taught at Jinan University and Yenching University. Later, he was a visiting professor in Pennsylvania and Hawaii.

Life was often hard for Feng because of big changes in China. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, many universities had to move to find safety. Feng stayed in China even when the government changed. He had to rewrite some of his books to match new political ideas. This happened during a time called the Cultural Revolution. Even with these hardships, he refused to leave his home. He lived in Beijing until he died on November 26, 1990.
