Chao had a legendary gift for hearing very tiny differences in sounds. This helped him record many Chinese dialects with great accuracy. He wanted to help people understand how language connects us all. His work helped make learning Chinese much easier for many people.

Chao worked hard to create new ways to write and teach Chinese. He helped design the Gwoyeu Romatzyh system, which uses the alphabet to show sounds.

He wrote the Mandarin Primer, which became a very famous textbook. He even wrote a book called A Grammar of Spoken Chinese. These tools helped people study the rules of how words are used.

His journey as a student and teacher began a long time ago. Chao was born in Tianjin in 1892. When he was twelve, he could already speak four different Chinese dialects.
