He was a writer, a teacher, and a diplomat. He was born in Shanghai on December 17, 1891. His father, Hu Chuan, was a tea merchant. Later, his father became a public servant. Hu Shih moved to Taiwan with his family in 1893. He eventually moved to Anhui to live in his ancestral home. He wanted to find a modern way to learn. This led him to seek a new kind of education.

As a student, Hu Shih traveled to the United States. He went to Cornell University on a special scholarship.

At first, he studied how to farm. In 1912, he changed his focus to philosophy and literature. He was even elected to a special group called Phi Beta Kappa. Later, he studied at Columbia University in New York City. There, he met a famous teacher named John Dewey. Hu Shih became a translator for Dewey's important ideas.

One of Hu Shih's biggest goals was changing how people wrote. In China, the old way of writing was called Classical Chinese. It was very hard for most people to read or learn. Hu Shih promoted a new way called vernacular Chinese. This used the common words that people actually spoke. He believed a dead language could not make living literature. This change helped many more people learn to read. It made knowledge available to ordinary people everywhere.

Hu Shih held many important jobs throughout his life. He was a professor at Peking University. He also served as an ambassador to the United States from 1938 to 1942.

Later, he became the president of Academia Sinica in Taipei. He stayed in this role until he died in 1962. He even worked as a chief executive for a journal. He used his voice to talk about democracy and fairness.

Today, many people remember Hu Shih for his great work. He helped start the New Culture Movement in China. He also took part in the May Fourth Movement. His ideas about pragmatism helped people solve real problems. Pragmatism is a way of using science and testing to find answers. Even though some people disagreed with him, his influence grew. Now, a building at Cornell is named after him. His life shows how ideas can change a whole country.
