This system helped many people learn to read and write more easily. It became a vital tool for modern life in China and beyond.

Creating pinyin was a big job that took a lot of careful work. In 1955, the Chinese premier, Zhou Enlai, asked Zhou Youguang to lead a special team. Their goal was to make an alphabet to help more people become literate. They worked on this project for about three years. The team looked at older systems like Gwoyeu Romatzyh and Latinxua Sin Wenz for ideas. They also used bopomofo to help show the different tones in the language. This careful process turned many ideas into one helpful system.

Zhou's life began in Changzhou, Jiangsu, on January 13, 1906. He grew up in a family that had worked for the government. He studied very hard and went to St. John's University in Shanghai. His friends and family even helped pay his tuition when things were difficult. Later, he moved to Japan to study at the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University. These years of study helped him understand many different ways of thinking. He was always looking for new ways to learn and grow.

Many important dates mark the success of his work. The Chinese government officially adopted pinyin in 1958. Later, Zhou traveled to Warsaw in 1979 to share pinyin with the world. In 1982, it became an international standard called ISO 7098. Because he helped translate the Encyclopædia Britannica, people called him "Encyclopedia Zhou." He was also a supercentenarian, which means he lived to be over 110 years old. He lived to be 111, passing away in January 2017.

Zhou's work connects the old ways of writing with our modern world. Even though pinyin was meant to replace characters, it ended up helping them instead. Today, people use pinyin to type on computers and phones. He wrote over 40 books to share his knowledge with others. Even after he turned 100, he kept publishing new books. His life shows how one person's ideas can help millions of people communicate better every day.
