He grew up in a city called Białystok in the Russian Empire. This city was home to many different groups of people. They spoke many languages like Yiddish, Russian, and Polish. Zamenhof saw that these groups often had quarrels and much misunderstanding. He believed that these fights happened because people could not talk to each other fairly. He wanted to create a neutral tool to help everyone connect. This tool would be a new, international language for all people.

Zamenhof worked hard to build this new way of speaking.

He first thought about his ideas as early as 1873. Later, he decided the grammar should be simple for everyone to learn. In 1887, he published his first book, called "Unua libro." He used a special name for himself when he published it. He called himself "Doktoro Esperanto," which means "Doctor Hoper." People began calling the language Esperanto after his secret name.
