A priest named Johann Martin Schleyer created it in Germany. He wanted a way for everyone to talk to each other.

He felt sad when he saw people who could not communicate. He wanted to build a bridge between different nations. This made him work hard to create a new system.

Schleyer built the language using many different sources. He used words from English, German, and Russian. He also used words from Romance languages like French and Spanish.

He wanted most words to be very short. Because of this, many words changed a lot. For example, "vol" comes from the word "world."

He also used rules from German grammar. However, he made these rules very steady and regular.

In the beginning, Volapük was a huge success. By 1889, it had about 283 clubs around the world.

There were also 316 different textbooks written in many languages. Some people say there were nearly one million students. People held big meetings to talk about the language. The first two meetings were in Germany. The third meeting in 1889 was held in Paris. During that meeting, people spoke only Volapük.

Later, the language faced some hard times. There were many arguments and fights among the members.

Because of these fights, many people switched to a language called Esperanto. Esperanto was simpler and had no central control. In the 1930s, a man named Arie de Jong helped the language. He made a new version called Volapük Nulik. This version made the words easier to recognize. For instance, he changed "lömib" to "rein" for rain.

Today, Volapük is mostly used as a fun hobby. A small group of people still keeps it alive. They even use it to write articles on Wikipedia.

In 2007, the Volapük Wikipedia grew very quickly. One person used a computer program to add many articles. This helped more people see the language online. It shows how the internet can help old things find new life. Even though it is small, the community stays connected.
