Constructed language

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A constructed language is a way for humans to communicate. Most languages grow naturally as people talk over many years. However, a constructed language is intentionally made by a person or a group. People often call these languages "conlangs" for short.

These languages are created for a specific purpose. Some are made for art, while others are made for logic. A person can even build a language to help humans talk to machines. This field of study is known as interlinguistics.

Building a conlang involves many different parts. Creators must design a system for sounds, which is called phonology. They also create rules for how words fit together, known as grammar. Every conlang needs a vocabulary, which is a set of words. They also need an orthography, or a way to write the language down.

Some conlangs are "a priori," meaning they use entirely new rules. Others are "a posteriori," meaning they use parts of existing languages. This can make the new language much easier to learn.

People have been experimenting with language for a very long time. In ancient times, thinkers like Plato studied how words relate to things. A man named Alexarchus once used very strange words in his writing. He called a rooster a "dawn-crier" and a barber a "mortal-shaver." In the seventh century, an Irish legend spoke of a man named Fénius Farsaid. He supposedly studied many languages to create the Irish language. Later, in the 12th century, St. Hildegard of Bingen recorded the Lingua Ignota. This is thought to be one of the first entirely artificial languages.

History shows many different types of language projects. In the 1600s, thinkers like John Wilkins tried to make philosophical languages. These were meant to organize all human knowledge into specific categories. Later, in 1879, Johann Martin Schleyer created Volapük to help people communicate. It was very popular and had hundreds of clubs worldwide. In 1887, L. L. Zamenhof proposed Esperanto, which became very successful. More recently, the movie Avatar used a language called Na'vi.

Even Star Trek has its own language called Klingon.

Conlangs can be grouped into three main categories. The first is engineered languages, which are used for logic or math. The second is auxiliary languages, meant for international communication. The third is artistic languages, created for stories or for fun.

An artistic language might be used to make a fictional world feel real. A logical language might be used to remove confusion from sentences. Whether they are for magic, science, or movies, conlangs show great human creativity. They allow us to imagine entirely new ways of thinking and speaking.
