Have you ever wondered how a word connects to a real thing?

Semantics is the special study of meaning in language. It looks at how words and sentences work together. It also looks at how we understand the ideas they carry. This field helps us see how language relates to the world. It explores how we get meaning from different layers of speech.

This includes everything from small parts like morphemes to whole texts.

One way to understand meaning is through sense and reference.

A reference is the actual object that a word points to. The sense is the idea or concept in your mind. For example, the "morning star" and "evening star" both point to the same planet. They have the same reference, but they have different senses. This helps explain how two different phrases can mean the same thing. Understanding both the object and the idea is very important.

Meaning also works through a rule called compositionality.

ParseTree

This is part of phrasal semantics, which studies sentence meaning. It says that the meaning of a big sentence comes from its parts. You can understand "Zuzana owns a dog" by knowing each word. This rule helps us understand almost infinite new sentences every day. Even if you have never seen a sentence before, you can grasp it. It uses the words and the way they are arranged.

Semantics has a long and interesting history. People have studied meaning since ancient times. However, it did not become its own field until the 19th century. The word comes from a Greek word meaning "relating to signs."

A man named Michel Bréal first used it in English. He was a linguist who helped define the term. Before this, the word was sometimes used for medical symptoms. Now, it is a major part of linguistics and philosophy.

Semantics is different from other parts of language study. Syntax focuses on the rules for making correct sentences. Phonology looks at the different sounds we use to speak. Pragmatics is how people use language in real life. For example, a phrase can mean different things in different situations.

Semantics stays focused on the general, dictionary-style meaning. It looks at what words can mean in a general way. This helps us separate the words themselves from how people use them.
