People use linguistics to explore many different things. Some experts focus on theoretical linguistics to find the fundamental nature of language. Others use applied linguistics to help people learn to read and write. There are even people who use math to solve language problems. This is known as mathematical linguistics. This field makes the study of language a truly huge and useful science.

Linguists look at language in many small pieces. One piece is morphology, which is the study of how words are built. Words are made of morphemes, which are the smallest units with meaning. For example, the word "catching" has two morphemes: the root "catch" and the suffix "-ing." Another piece is syntax, which is the study of sentence structure. Syntax looks at word order and how phrases are formed. There is also phonetics, which studies the physical sounds we make. For sign languages, linguists study hand and face movements instead of sounds.

Understanding meaning is another big part of this science. This is split into two main areas called semantics and pragmatics. Semantics looks at the literal meaning of words and sentences. It uses tools from logic and computer science to study this. Pragmatics is a bit different because it looks at context. It studies how we understand meaning based on who is talking. It also looks at the intent of the speaker. This helps us see how language works in real life.

Language has a long and changing history. Historical linguistics is the study of how languages change over time. This field grew out of philology, which was the study of old texts. In the late 19th century, this was a very popular way to study language. Scholars used it to group languages into families. They even tried to rebuild "proto-languages" from the very distant past. Some researchers even look back as far as 10,000 years. This helps us see how different languages are related to each other.

Linguistics connects to many other interesting subjects. It is related to philosophy, which asks big questions about language. It also connects to computer science through computational linguistics. This field uses computers to model how natural language works. Linguists also study how children learn to speak and how adults use language. Whether looking at written books or spoken words, linguistics is everywhere. It is a way to see the rules that humans follow every day.
