Linguists look at many parts of language. One part is syntax. This is the set of rules for building sentences. Another part is morphology. This is the study of how words are made. For example, the word "catching" uses the root "catch" and a suffix "-ing." Both are morphemes, or small parts of a word with meaning.

Linguists also study sounds. This is called phonetics. They also study phonology. This is the system of sounds in a language. For sign languages, they look at hand and face movements.

Some experts study meaning. This is called semantics. Others study pragmatics. This is how we use context to understand meaning.

History is also important. Historical linguistics looks at how languages change over time. Some people use math to model language. Others use computers to help. This is called computational linguistics. This work helps us teach reading and writing. It helps us learn how humans use language every day.
