Theoretical linguistics

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people study how language works. This is called theoretical linguistics. They want to know what language is. They also ask how it works in our minds. These experts build models to explain language.

One part is morphology. This is the study of word parts. For example, adding an "-s" to "dog" makes it "dogs." This shows there is more than one.

Another part is syntax. This is the study of sentence structure. It looks at how words fit together. In English, we often use a set order. We say the subject, then the verb, then the object. This order helps us understand the meaning.

Experts also study semantics. This is the study of word meanings. They look at what words and phrases really mean.

Finally, they study phonology. This is how sounds work in a language. It looks at how sounds carry meaning. It also looks at things like stress and tone. These studies help us learn how the mind uses language. It is a big way to understand how we think.
