These are a type of constructed language called a conlang. Authors create them for books, movies, or video games. They want to give their stories more depth. A language can make a world seem more believable. It can also help characters feel truly alien. This makes them feel different from our own world. These languages help show what different groups are like. They can set different races apart from each other.

Creating a language is a very careful job.

A creator must decide on words and grammar rules. They often build a whole world called a conworld first. The conworld tells the creator what words are needed. For example, they might need words for local plants or clothes. The culture even changes how the language works. It can change how people talk about colors or family. The sounds of the language also tell us about the people. The creator uses sounds to show what a race is like.

Many of these languages have a long history of use. J.R.R. Tolkien created the Elvish languages Quenya and Sindarin. These were made for his famous books. In the Star Trek universe, people use the Klingon language. Marc Okrand is the person who created Klingon. Some languages are even used in professional jobs. Victoria Fromkin was the first person hired to do this. She created the Paku language for Land of the Lost in 1974. Other pros include David Peterson and Paul Frommer.

There are many famous examples to find in media.

Some languages are visual instead of spoken. Circular Gallifreyan from Doctor Who uses shapes instead of sounds. The film Arrival shows a written language for heptapods. These different ways of speaking make stories very special.

A creator might finish their work and move on. Then, the fans pick up where the creator left off. They add more words to make it more useful. Some people become truly fluent in these languages. They join subcultures of people who love them. In stories, characters often use tools to communicate. Star Trek uses a universal translator for this. Another story uses a tiny Babel fish to translate speech.
