David Joshua Peterson is a talented American language creator. He builds brand new ways for people to speak. These are called constructed languages.

He uses these languages to make stories feel much more real. When characters in a movie speak a unique tongue, it helps the world feel alive. Peterson has become very famous for this special skill. He makes sure every new language fits the world it belongs to.

Making a language is a very big job. It is not just about making up new words. Peterson also creates ways to write them down. He often makes unique alphabets or special systems. For example, he created an abugida for the Chakobsa language. An abugida is a specific way of writing using symbols.

He even makes sign languages for characters to use. This careful work helps tell a deep story. Every sound and symbol has a purpose in his craft.

Peterson's journey into this work started at a university. He studied English and linguistics at UC Berkeley. He also earned a master's degree in linguistics.

In the year 2000, he attended an Esperanto class. This was his first time seeing a constructed language. Later, he helped start the Language Creation Society. He even served as its president for three years. These steps helped him become a professional creator.

He became a star through the show Game of Thrones. In 2009, HBO held a contest for a new language. Peterson won and created the Dothraki language.

He also made High Valyrian for the same series. He even made a tiny language called Mege Nuk for giants. His work continues in big films like Dune. For Dune, he created the Chakobsa language and its sign language. He even made a language for the film Superman.

Peterson loves to share his amazing knowledge with others. He wrote a book called The Art of Language Invention. He also made a free course on the Duolingo app.

This course lets people learn how to speak High Valyrian. Much of his recent work is done with his wife, Jessie Peterson. They work together to build worlds through speech. It is a wonderful way to connect art with science. His work brings magic to the screens we watch.
