Peter Ladefoged was a man who studied the amazing sounds of human speech. He was a linguist and a phonetician. A phonetician is a scientist who studies how people use their mouths to make sounds.

He wanted to understand every single sound a person could make. He estimated that humans use about 900 different consonants. He also believed there were around 200 different vowels. This work helped people understand how languages work all over the world.

Ladefoged worked in many different ways to study these sounds. He set up a special phonetics laboratory at UCLA in 1962. In this lab, he could listen to and record speech carefully. He wrote several important books to help students learn. One book is called A Course in Phonetics. Another famous book is The Sounds of the World's Languages.

He even helped a movie called My Fair Lady. He wrote the special speech notes used by a character in the film.

His journey into the world of sounds began in England. He was born in Sutton on September 17, 1925. He went to school at Haileybury College and later studied at Cambridge University. Later, he went to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He earned his master's degree in 1951. He also finished his PhD in 1959.

These years of study helped him become a leader in his field.

Ladefoged traveled to many places to teach and learn. He worked at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He also spent time at the University of Edinburgh. For many years, he lived and taught in California at UCLA.

He was a very important leader in science groups. He served as the President of the International Phonetic Association from 1986 to 1991. He also helped the Endangered Language Fund. This group works to protect languages that are disappearing.

His life was full of many different interests and roles. He was married to Jenny MacDonald for over 50 years. They had three children named Lise, Thegn, and Katie.

He also had five grandchildren. Ladefoged died in London in 2006 at the age of 80. He was traveling home from a research trip in India. Even though he is gone, his books are still used by students today.
