It is one of the largest atolls on Earth. This place is part of the Malaita Province. It sits far north of Santa Isabel Island. The shape of the atoll looks a bit like a boot. Nearby, you can find the Nukumanu Atoll to the north. To the south lies the Roncador Reef, which is under the water.

This atoll is a very special place for many people.

The land here is very low and close to the sea. Most of the islands are made of coral. The highest spot on the atoll is only 3 meters above the water. There are 122 small islands spread across the area. About 2,000 people live on these islands today. Most people live in two main villages. One village is on the island of Luaniua in the east. This village has 1,386 people. The other village is on Pelau in the northeast. It has 689 people. The people here grow coconuts and taro roots. They also spend time fishing in the ocean.

People have lived on these islands for a very long time. Polynesians first moved here about 2,000 years ago. In 1568, a Spanish group led by Álvaro de Mendaña likely saw the islands. They called the area Bajos de la Candelaria. Later, Abel Tasman saw the islands in 1643. He named the place Ontong Java. In 1791, Captain John Hunter visited the islands. He called them the Lord Howe Atoll. In 1893, Germany took control of the islands. Later, in 1899, the islands were given to Great Britain.

The people of Ontong Java have a unique culture. They are a Polynesian community living in a Melanesian area. They speak the Ontong Java language. This language has two dialects named Luangiua and Pelau. In the past, men and women wore many tattoos. Scientists like Ernst Sarfert and Hans Damm studied the people. They went on a big trip to the Southern Seas from 1908 to 1910. They wrote a book about the islands in 1931. They even suggested the name Luangiua was more correct.

Scientists still visit the atoll to learn more about its past. In 2025, a team of researchers went to the islands to dig. They wanted to find clues about old stone monuments. They found charcoal and food waste near the high tide line. This suggests humans arrived shortly after the island rose from the sea. They also found bones of the Pacific rat. This type of rat usually travels with Polynesian people. These finds help us understand how people moved across the ocean. The atoll is also a home for many sea birds. One kind is the black-naped tern, which comes here to breed.
