It only shares land borders with the Sorong Regency. Many people use Sorong as a gateway to the Raja Ampat Islands. These islands are famous for their coral reefs. These reefs are part of a place with much sea life. The city is also a center for oil and gas work. It helps move supplies for these industries.

Learning about the name of the city is interesting. The name comes from the Biak word "Soren." This word means a deep and wavy ocean. The Biak-Numfor people first used this name. They sailed to many islands before settling in Raja Ampat. They called the land "Daratan Maladum" at first. Later, many different people visited the area. These included Chinese merchants and European missionaries. Over many years, the name changed into Sorong.

History shows that Sorong has changed a lot. The Dutch had a small influence there at first. They set up a center on Doom Island in 1906. In the 1930s, a Dutch company found oil near the coast. This made the area very important for the Dutch. During World War II, Japan occupied the city in 1942. Later, the US 6th Division removed the Japanese presence in 1944. After the war, a 58 kilometer pipeline was built. This was the Klamono-Sorong pipeline for oil.

Today, the city is a busy place to live. About 286,028 people live in Sorong as of mid-2024. This includes 150,236 males and 135,729 females.
