The province has a special way of working. It has a status called special autonomy. This means the local government has its own power. They can make rules for many things. However, they cannot make rules for five specific areas. These areas are foreign affairs, security, religion, justice, and money.

The province also gets special funds to help its people. These funds are meant to benefit the indigenous people living there.

History shows that the land has changed many times. Before 2003, Papua covered all of Western New Guinea. It had many different names over the years. It was called West Irian and Irian Jaya. In 2002, the province took its current name. The borders changed again very recently. In 2021, the western end became West Papua. In July 2022, three more provinces were split off. Now, Papua covers a much smaller northern area.

Today, the province is divided into eight regencies and one city. The city of Jayapura is the capital. It is also the most crowded place in the province.

The population is estimated to be about 1,073,640 people. Most of these people live near the coast. Many people in the province are Christian. About 70% of the people identify as Christian. The least populated area is the Supiori Regency. It is mostly made of the island of Supiori.

The people of Papua have very special cultures. These traditions are unique to this part of Indonesia.

Coastal people often use modern things in their daily lives. This can change their original traditions over time. People living inland often keep their original ways. The government helps protect these customs through a special group. This group is the Papuan People's Assembly. It includes tribal chiefs and religious leaders who speak for local customs.
