Highland Papua is a province in Indonesia located in the central highlands of Western New Guinea.

It is a very special place because it is the only landlocked province in the whole country. This means it has no ocean or sea coast nearby. Instead, it is surrounded by other lands like South Papua and Central Papua. To the east, it shares a border with the country of Papua New Guinea.

The province covers a large area in the mountains.

The land here is very steep and rugged. You would see high mountains and thick, dense forests. Some of the highest peaks are even covered in snow.

Deep in these mountains, there are wide valleys like the Baliem Valley. These valleys provide places for people to live and grow food. The weather and the high hills make the geography quite tricky to travel through. It is a place of big landscapes and many different living things.

For a long time, the world did not know much about this area. In the 17th century, a sailor named Jan Carstenszoon saw snow on the mountains.

At that time, Europeans called it "terra incognita," which means unknown land. It was not until the 1900s that explorers began to meet the local tribes. An expedition in 1909 led by Hendrikus Albertus Lorentz sought a path to a snowy peak. Later, in 1938, an expedition led by Richard Archbold found the Baliem Valley by accident. This valley became known as the "Great Valley" by the Dutch.

Highland Papua is a very young province. It was officially created on July 25, 2022. This happened when President Joko Widodo signed a new law.

The capital is located in the Jayawijaya Regency, specifically in the Hubikosi District. As of mid-2025, about 1,484,870 people live in the province. This number includes 791,070 males and 693,780 females. The population grows by about 17,000 people every year. It is one of the newest provinces in Indonesia.

Today, many different groups of people call these highlands home. The Dani people live in the Baliem Valley and have their own unique ways of life.
