These include the Halmahera Sea, the Molucca Sea, and the Seram Sea. It sits near other places like North Sulawesi and Southwest Papua. Many islands make up this beautiful area.

The name Maluku has a very interesting history. It likely comes from the term "Moloku Kie Raha." This means the "Four Mountains of Maluku." This name refers to four royal centers. These were the kingdoms of Ternate, Tidore, Bacan, and Jailolo. These kingdoms formed a group of four. They were very important in the eastern Indonesian islands. Some experts believe the name refers to these four mountains.

History in this region was often filled with competition. In the 1500s, Europeans arrived looking for spices. The Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch all wanted to control the trade. The Portuguese arrived in Ternate in 1512. Later, the Dutch won the struggle for control. They ruled the region for three centuries. During World War II, Japan also invaded the area.
