In the 1500s, people from Europe came to trade. The Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch all wanted to control the spices. The Dutch eventually won and ruled for 300 years. Later, Japan invaded during World War II. Ternate became a center for Japanese rule.

Today, many people live in North Maluku. The largest city is Ternate. The capital is Sofifi. Most people work in farming or fishing. They grow things like rice, corn, and coconut. They also grow nutmeg and cloves. These are the special spices the area is known for. People also find gold and nickel in the land.
