Tidore includes one large island. It also has three small islands named Mare, Maitara, and Filonga. Some parts of the city sit on the big island of Halmahera. The city of Sofifi is the capital of the province. It is located on the Halmahera mainland.

The main island is a large volcano. It has a cone shape. A peak called Kie Matubu sits at the south end. The north side has a large crater called Sabale. This crater has two smaller volcanic cones inside it. To the south, three small islands sit in a line. These islands are also volcanoes.

Long ago, Tidore was a powerful place. It was a center for the spice trade. A ruling family, called a sultanate, held much power. They were rivals with the nearby land of Ternate. Later, the Spanish and the Dutch also came to the area. Many people lived and traded there for hundreds of years. Today, over 121,000 people live in the Tidore Islands City.
