Ternate grew into a major port for spice traders. It became an Islamic sultanate during the reign of Zainal Abidin.

Ternate was famous for growing cloves. These spices made the sultans very wealthy and strong. They fought with the nearby Sultanate of Tidore for control. Many foreign groups wanted to join this trade. The Portuguese arrived in 1512 and built Fort Kastela.

Later, the Spanish and the Dutch also came to the islands. The island was even split between these two powers. The Dutch eventually became the main ruling power in the area.

Today, Ternate connects many different regions together. Even though the spice trade is not as big now, the history remains. The sultanates are still part of the area today. You can see how the city has changed through old paintings.
