This sea is very important for the ocean. It helps move water around. It carries water from the Pacific Ocean to shallower seas. These nearby seas are all around it. The sea is divided into three basins. The Batjan basin is the deepest part of them all.

This sea is a busy place for nature. The water is very deep in many spots. This depth makes it a great place for diving. Divers can see much beautiful coral under the waves. The sea also moves in a special way. It acts like a path for water. This movement helps connect the big Pacific Ocean to smaller areas. It is a vital part of the local water system. The deep basins hold a lot of this moving water.

There is a lot of movement under the sea. This area is very active with earthquakes. This happens because of the Molucca Sea Plate. A plate is a large piece of the Earth's crust. This plate is being pushed down in two opposite ways. It moves west toward the Eurasian Plate. It also moves east toward the Philippine Sea Plate. This double movement makes the area quite shaky.

Earthquakes do happen here quite often. One big earthquake occurred on January 6, 2019. It was a large event with a 7.0 measurement. Luckily, it did not cause any tsunamis. The sea is known for these seismic events. This is because the plate is always moving. The movement is a constant thing in this region. Scientists watch these plates very closely.

History shows us why this sea was so special. Long ago, many strong empires fought here. The Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Spanish all wanted control. They all wanted to reach the famous spice islands. You had to travel through the Molucca Sea to get there. This made the sea a very important path for trade. The islands and the water were keys to finding spices. This history connects the sea to the whole world.
