It sits in a place called the East Indian Archipelago. This is a huge group of islands. The sea is very deep under the waves. It is a key part of the ocean in this region. Many different islands help shape its borders. It is a beautiful and important part of the world.

Many islands sit around this sea like a frame. To the north, you will find the island of Sulawesi. To the south, the Sunda Islands sit near the water. These include the islands of Flores and Sumbawa. Other islands like Komodo and Banta are also on the south coast.

These landmasses create the edges of the sea. The islands keep the water tucked in between them.

Other seas meet the Flores Sea at its edges. The Bali Sea lies to the west. To the northwest, you can find the Java Sea. The Banda Sea is to the east and northeast.

To the south, the Savu Sea and the Indian Ocean are nearby. However, many islands stand in the way. These islands separate the Flores Sea from those other large waters.

Experts use specific lines to mark where the sea begins. The International Hydrographic Organization defines these limits. The north border follows the coast of Sulawesi. It starts at the West point of Laikang Bay. The south border follows the north coasts of Flores and Komodo. It also follows the coast of Banta and Sumbawa.

These lines help people map the ocean correctly.

The east and west borders also use island paths. The east border goes from Flores to Kalaotoa Island. It then moves through a chain of islands. It passes near Pulo Salayar and Tanjong Lassa. The west border moves from Tanjong Sarokaja to Paternoster island. It then goes through Postiljon Island.
