It sits within the country of Indonesia. Other parts of the island belong to East Malaysia and Brunei. Kalimantan covers about 73% of the total island area. It is a very large and important region. Many people call the whole island Kalimantan in Indonesia. In English, people usually call the entire island Borneo. This name came from European explorers meeting the Bruneian Sultanate long ago.

The name Kalimantan has a very interesting meaning. It comes from a Sanskrit word. This word means "burning weather island" or "very hot island." This name describes the hot and humid tropical climate. The name uses words for seasons and boiling.

Local people once called the island Pulu K'lemantan. A Portuguese explorer named Jorge de Menezes met these people in the sixteenth century. This history helps us understand the name we use today.

Kalimantan is divided into five different provinces. These are West, Central, South, East, and North Kalimantan.

The provinces were created at different times. In 1956, the area was split into three provinces. Central Kalimantan was created later in 1957. North Kalimantan was the last to be split off in 2012. This shows how the region has changed over many years.

Many different groups of people live in Kalimantan. There are many ethnic groups living together. The Dayaks and Javanese are some of the largest groups. Malays and Buginese people also live there.

Most people in the region follow the religion of Islam. Many others are Protestant or Roman Catholic. In 2020, the population of the Indonesian part was over 23 million people. This makes the region a very busy and diverse place.

Indonesia is now planning a very big change for Kalimantan. The President proposed moving the national capital to this region. A new city called Nusantara is being built in East Kalimantan. This is a huge project that is still happening. Officials hope the construction will be fully complete by 2045. The city was supposed to open in August 2024. However, construction delays mean the move has not happened yet. This new city will link the future of Indonesia to Kalimantan.
