It sits in a group of islands called the Lesser Sunda Archipelago. To the northwest, you will find the island of Sumbawa. Across the Sumba Strait to the northeast lies Flores. To the east, across the Savu Sea, is Timor. Australia sits far to the south across the Indian Ocean. The island is about the same size as Hawaii.

It is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province.

The land on Sumba looks very different from other Indonesian islands. Instead of steep volcanoes, it has low hills made of limestone. The weather changes with two main seasons. From May to November, the island is dry. From December to April, the rainy season arrives. The west side is more fertile and has more people living there. The north side is very dry because of the weather.

Most of the land used to be forest. Now, much of it is used for growing crops like maize and cassava.

Sumba has a very long and interesting history. Local stories say an ancient stone bridge once connected Sumba to Flores. Long ago, the Majapahit empire from Java ruled the island. During this time, the name "Sumba" was first used in writing. Later, Europeans arrived by ship in 1522. The Portuguese came to find natural resources. Eventually, the Dutch arrived and controlled the island. People often called it the "Sandalwood Island" because they exported that wood to Europe.

There are many amazing living things on the island. Sumba is part of a place called Wallacea. This means it has plants and animals from both Asia and Australia. The island is very rich in bird life. There are nearly 200 different kinds of birds there. Some birds, like the Sumba eclectus parrot, live only on this island. The Sumba hornbill is also found here.

However, there are fewer than 4,000 hornbills left in the wild.

The people of Sumba keep many ancient traditions alive. They are famous for building megaliths. These are large stone structures used for burials. Some are upright stones, while others are stone enclosures or tombs.

People still build about 100 new stone tombs every year. You can also see traditional houses in many villages.
