You can find it sitting east of Borneo and west of the Maluku Islands. To the north, the Philippines are nearby. The island is also near Flores and Timor to the south.

It is a very important part of the region known as Wallacea.

The shape of the island is very unique. It has four long arms called peninsulas. These arms are the Minahasa, East, South, and Southeast peninsulas. Three large bays, or gulfs, separate these arms from one another. These are the Gulf of Tomini, the Tolo Gulf, and the Gulf of Boni.

Because the center of the island is so mountainous, it is hard to build roads. For a long time, people found it easier to travel by sea. This helped connect the different parts of the island.

Geologists believe the island was formed in a very busy way. It was created when different pieces of the Earth's crust crashed together. These pieces came from the Asian Plate and the Australian Plate.

Because the land was made this way, there are many faults in the ground. These faults can cause earthquakes, like the ones in 2018 and 2021. Some parts of the north also have active volcanoes. You can find mountains like Mount Lokon and Mount Awu there.

Humans have a very long history on Sulawesi. Scientists found stone tools that might be over one million years old.

These tools were found near the village of Ujung. People also left beautiful art in limestone caves. Some hand stencils in the Pettakere Cave are about 39,900 years old. Other paintings show animals like pigs and buffalo.

Many different groups of people have lived here over time. In Central Sulawesi, there are more than 400 large granite stones called megaliths.

These stones were made between 3000 BC and AD 1300. Some of them even look like human forms. The island is also home to many unique living things. You might see a babirusa or an ornate lorikeet.
