The Sulu Archipelago is a long chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean.

It sits in the southwestern Philippines. This island chain marks the northern edge of the Celebes Sea. It also forms the southern limit of the Sulu Sea. The islands belong to the Mindanao island group. They include the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. People sometimes call the area Basulta. This name comes from the first parts of those three provinces.

These islands were not made by a land bridge. Instead, they are the edges of small ridges under the sea. These ridges were made by the sea floor tilting. Some islands, like Basilan, Jolo, and Tawi-Tawi, are extinct volcanic cones. This means they were volcanoes in the past but do not erupt now. Tawi-Tawi is the southernmost island in the group. It has a core of rock called serpentine and a covering of limestone. The chain is also a very important path for migrating birds.

Many different groups of people call these islands home. The Tausūg people are one major group. There are also various Sama peoples living here. This includes the Yakan people and the Jama Mapun. Some Sama people, known as the Bajau, are semi-nomadic. This means they move from place to place. Many languages are spoken across the islands. Tausūg is a very common language. People also speak Sama-Bajaw languages and many dialects of Sinama.

The history of these islands is very long and complex. The area was once part of the Majapahit empire. Later, it was part of the Bruneian Sultanate. In 1405, the independent Sultanate of Sulu was founded. This sultanate was very strong and controlled many lands. It included parts of Borneo, Mindanao, and Palawan.

For a long time, the sultanate and the Spanish Empire fought. The Spanish wanted to rule the area. This led to many battles over many years. Even the British had a presence in the region for a time.

Today, the archipelago is divided into several island groups. The largest groups are around Basilan, Jolo, and Tawi-Tawi. There are also smaller groups like the Pangutaran and Sibutu groups. Some of these islands have people living on them. Other islands are mostly empty. The largest towns are found on the island of Jolo. The islands remain a unique part of the Philippines.
