This archipelago sits in the Luzon Strait. It is located north of the main island of Luzon. It is also south of Taiwan. The group is made of 24 volcanic and coral islands. Five of these are much larger than the others. These main islands are Babuyan, Calayan, Dalupiri, Fuga, and Camiguin. The Babuyan Channel separates them from Luzon. The Balintang Channel sits to the north, near Batanes.

Many of these islands were formed by volcanic activity. The eastern islands are part of the Luzon Volcanic Arc. Some volcanoes here have erupted in historical times. For example, Camiguin de Babuyanes erupted on Camiguin Island. There is also the Babuyan Claro Volcano. Another one is the Smith Volcano on Babuyan Island.

A small island named Didicas is also volcanic. It became a permanent island in 1952. It rose above the sea level then. This shows how much the land can change.

Nature lovers find these islands very important. They are called key biodiversity areas. This means they have great biological value. Most of the plants and animals here live nowhere else. Research shows there are five different faunal regions here. This is one of the highest densities in the world. The islands are also an Important Bird Area. Many birds like the Taiwan green pigeon live here. You can also see the Ryukyu scops-owl.

Some of the animals here are very rare. The Calayan rail is a bird found only on Calayan Island. It is a critically endangered species. On Dalupiri Island, you can find the Ross' wolf snake. This snake is also critically endangered. The waters around the islands are special too. Humpback whales come here to gather in the winter. It is one of the few such sites in Southeast Asia. These whales have even re-colonized the area.

People live across the different islands in the group. In 2020, Calayan Island had 9,648 people. Camiguin Island had 5,231 people living there. Fuga Island had 1,939 people. Babuyan Island had 1,910 people. Dalupiri Island had 621 people. Even the tiny Barit Island had 14 people. The islands are part of the province of Cagayan. Some islands belong to the town of Calayan. Others, like Fuga, belong to the town of Aparri.
