This archipelago sits near the coasts of the Philippines, Malaysia, and southern Vietnam. It is made of many different things like islands, islets, and over 100 reefs. Some of these are even grouped into sunken coral structures called atolls. Most of these are cays, which are sand islands built on top of old coral reefs.

Because they sit in important shipping lanes, these islands are very important for trade.

Many of these islands are very small and hard to reach. The northeast part of the group is called the Dangerous Ground. This area has many low islands and sunken reefs. These reefs often rise quickly from very deep water. This makes it a hard place for ships to travel safely.

The islands have very little land that can be used for farming. Most of them do not have a steady supply of fresh water to drink. Even though they are small, they are very important for the ocean.

In 1843, a British whaling captain named Richard Spratly saw Spratly Island. The islands were named after him. For a long time, the islands were mostly just coral islets where seabirds lived. By 1939, they were still mostly just small bits of coral. In 1986, a source from China said the area had 14 islands. It also listed 113 submerged reefs and many other underwater banks.

Today, the islands are much more busy than they used to be.

There are many different resources found around these islands. They have rich fishing grounds that provide many fish. There may also be large amounts of oil and natural gas under the sea. Some people have even mined guano, which is bird droppings, from the islands.

Because of these riches, many countries want to own them. China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia all have military forces on different islands. Brunei also claims a part of the area in the southeast.

Nature is very busy in the waters around the Spratly Islands. There are nearly 3,000 different marine species living there. This includes 382 types of hard coral and 524 kinds of fish. Sea turtles, like the green turtle, also use the islands to nest.

Seabirds like the brown booby also come here to rest and breed. However, human activities like fishing and tourism can sometimes hurt these animals. Scientists are working to learn more about this mysterious part of the ocean.
