This archipelago includes about 130 small coral islands and reefs. Most of these are split into two main areas. One area is the Amphitrite Group in the northeast. The other is the Crescent Group in the west.

The islands sit about 220 miles southeast of Hainan Island. They are also near the coast of Vietnam and the northern Philippines. Many different countries have different ideas about who owns these islands. The People's Republic of China has held control since 1974.

The islands have a very hot and humid climate. There is a lot of rainfall throughout the year. Sometimes, big storms called typhoons hit the islands. The air over the ocean makes the weather feel different than on large land masses. The air is often more moist here. Sea turtles and many seabirds live on the islands.

The ocean around the islands is full of fish. Scientists also think there might be oil and gas deep under the seabed. One amazing feature is Dragon Hole. This is a huge underwater sinkhole. It is the second deepest blue hole in the whole world.

People have known about these islands for a very long time. The name "Paracel" comes from a Portuguese word for a submerged reef. Portuguese maps from the 16th century show these islands.

In the past, Chinese books called them things like "Thousand-Mile Long Sands." The Amphitrite Group got its name from a French ship. This ship saw the islands between 1698 and 1700. Later, the Crescent Group islands were named after leaders from the British East India Company. Some islands even have names that were translated, like Money Island.

Woody Island is the largest island in the entire group. It covers an area of about 14 square kilometers. More than 1,000 people live on Woody Island.

This group of people includes fishermen, their families, and military workers. The Crescent Group has many different features too. For example, Pattle Island has a weather station from 1932 and a lighthouse from 1937. Some islands are very small, like the ones in the Qilian Yu sub-group. These are often just small pieces of sand.

Learning about the Paracel Islands helps us understand how islands form. They are made of coral reefs and sand cays.

Some islands, like Lincoln Island, are covered in brushes and coconut palm trees. Other parts of the islands are mostly underwater. This happens during high tide. The islands show how land and sea work together. They are a busy place for nature and for people. Even though they are small, they are a big part of the ocean.
