They are made of about 130 small coral islands and reefs. These islands sit about 220 miles southeast of Hainan Island. The islands are split into two main groups. One group is called the Amphitrite Group. It sits in the northeast. The other is the Crescent Group. It sits to the west.

The weather is hot and humid. There is a lot of rain. Big storms called typhoons can hit the islands. Sea turtles and seabirds live in this area. The ocean around the islands is full of fish. There may also be oil and gas deep under the sea. One special spot is Dragon Hole. It is a deep sinkhole under the water. It is the second deepest in the world.

Woody Island is the largest island. It has over 1,000 people living there. These people include fishermen and their families.
