It sits between many different lands and waters. China is to the north of the sea. The Indochinese Peninsula lies to the west. To the east, you will find Taiwan and the Philippines. To the south, the sea meets Borneo, Sumatra, and the Bangka Belitung Islands.

This sea connects to many other places. It reaches the East China Sea and the Philippine Sea through narrow straits. It also links to the Java Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

This sea is a very busy place for ships. In 2016, $3.4 trillion of the world's maritime shipping passed through these waters. This is a huge amount of trade. Many ships carry oil and natural gas through the sea each day.

The sea also helps provide food. In 2010, the Western Central Pacific was part of 14% of the world's commercial fishing. Large rivers like the Mekong and the Pearl flow into the sea. These rivers bring sand and dirt to the ocean floor.

People have known about this sea for a very long time. Early Chinese books from the Western Zhou dynasty mentioned it. They called it Nanfang Hai. Later, during the Spring and Autumn period, it was called Nan Hai. European sailors also visited the area a long time ago. In the 16th century, Portuguese sailors called it the China Sea. They used it as a path to trade with China. Over time, the name changed to the South China Sea to tell it apart from other waters.

There are many interesting things under the water. The sea sits above a drowned continental shelf. This means the land was once above the water. About 45 million years ago, the sea began to open up. It contains over 250 small features like islands and reefs.

Some of these are the Spratly Islands. The largest island there is Taiping Island. It is just over 1 km long. Some places, like Reed Bank, are now completely underwater. This happened about 7,000 years ago when sea levels rose.

Because the sea is so important, different countries use different names. Many countries claim parts of the sea. These include China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Vietnam. For example, Vietnam calls it the East Sea. The Philippines calls parts of it the West Philippine Sea. Indonesia calls its northern area the North Natuna Sea. These different names show how much the area matters to everyone living nearby.
