It is the largest island found in the South China Sea. Even though it is called an island group, there is only one real island. Other parts of the area are mostly just rocks.

The island sits on a large, circular coral reef called an atoll.

Pratas Island itself is shaped like a crescent moon. It sits on the western side of the atoll. Under the ocean, there are two large features called banks. These are the North Vereker Bank and the South Vereker Bank.

These banks rise up from the deep sea floor. There are many oil wells located to the west of these banks. The water in the lagoon is also a key part of the area.

Many different groups have visited or claimed this island through history. In 1858, a British survey ship made the first detailed map of the reef.

During World War II, Japanese naval personnel used the island. They used it as a listening post and a weather station. In May 1945, a group from a US submarine landed there.

They raised the American flag and named it Bluegill Island. However, the United States government never formally claimed the land. Later, the navy of the Republic of China took over in 1946.

Today, the island has several important features for people to use. Taiwan manages the area and runs a small airport called Dongsha Airport.

This was the very first marine national park in Taiwan. The island has a small post office that opened in 2013. A military garrison also stays on the island to look after it.

Pratas Island is a place where many different stories meet. It is a beautiful natural spot, but it is also a place of big questions. China claims the island as part of Guangdong Province.

Because of this, there are often many planes flying in the nearby airspace. In 2020, hundreds of military planes flew in the area between Taiwan and the island. These events show how important this small piece of land is to the world. It remains a vital part of the South China Sea today.
