They live in many different countries today. These include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei. They also live in parts of Thailand and Myanmar. Most Malay people live near the coast or on islands. This area is often called Maritime Southeast Asia. Because people have moved here for hundreds of years, Malay culture is very diverse. It includes many different languages, arts, and social ways.

Many different groups of people moved to these lands a long time ago.

One theory says people came from Taiwan 6,000 years ago. They moved through the Philippines to reach Borneo. Another theory suggests people came from Yunnan. These early groups were known as Proto-Malays. Later, the Deutero-Malays arrived with new tools. They knew how to work with metals and farm better. Instead of moving around constantly, they built settled villages called kampungs. These villages were usually near rivers or the sea.

History changed greatly in the 15th century with the Malacca Sultanate.

This era helped create the modern idea of being Malay. It set the standard for many things people use today. This includes traditional dress, food, and even martial arts.

Long ago, there were ancient kingdoms like Srivijaya and Brunei. A Chinese monk named Yijing visited the area in the 600s. He wrote about a kingdom called Mo-lo-yu. Some people think the name "Melayu" comes from a word meaning "to accelerate." This might describe a fast river current. Other old texts mention places like Malai or Malayapura. These names show how much people traveled and traded.

Today, being Malay is linked to specific traditions and beliefs.
