This region includes many places like New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji. The people who live here are known as Melanesians. They are the main indigenous inhabitants of these islands. This area is very diverse because of its many different groups. Some groups are known for speaking Papuan languages. Other groups speak languages from the Austronesian family. There are also special mixed languages called creoles, like Tok Pisin and Bislama.

Some people reached the land of Sahul between 50,000 and 37,000 years ago. Sahul was a giant continent that included both Australia and New Guinea. About 10,000 years ago, rising seas separated New Guinea from Australia. Later, Austronesian people moved into the area about 3,500 years ago. They traveled to the north and east coasts of New Guinea. These new arrivals met the people who were already living there. This led to many changes in culture and language over many years.

Scientists use DNA to learn more about these ancient movements.

They found that Melanesians have a very deep history. Some studies show that their ancestors met a group called Denisovans in Asia. The Denisovans were an ancient human species related to the Neanderthals. People in New Guinea share about 4% to 7% of their DNA with them. This shows that different human groups interacted long ago. This history is written in the very cells of the people living there today.

Researchers also study how different island groups are related.

For a long time, people thought Polynesians came from Melanesian groups. However, a study in 2010 changed this idea. It found that Polynesians and Micronesians are actually more related to East Asians. They likely moved through Melanesia very quickly using outrigger canoes. They did not stay long enough to mix much with the local people. This explains why the genetic groups in Melanesia are so different from each other.

There are many interesting facts about life in Melanesia today.
