These people belong to a huge group called the Austronesians. This group includes other famous sea travelers like Polynesians and Melanesians. They are known for being great explorers of the ocean. They used special tools to travel long distances on water. These tools included double-hulled canoes and boats with outriggers. They also used unique sails called crab claw sails.

These sea travelers moved across the ocean in different waves. They used their clever boat technology to spread quickly. Some migrants came from the west, near the Philippines and Indonesia. They settled the Mariana Islands about 3,500 years ago. Later, people settled Palau around 3,000 years ago. Other migrants came from the east, from eastern Melanesia. These people belonged to a group known as the Lapita culture. They settled the Gilbert Islands and the Marshall Islands many centuries ago.

Science helps us understand how these people arrived. A genetic study from 2022 shows many different origins. There were three separate streams of people who moved into the area. The first wave arrived in the Mariana Islands around 2800 BCE. A second wave reached Palau around 2400 BCE. A third wave settled Central Micronesia around 2100 BCE. These early travelers shared ancestry with people from Taiwan and the Philippines. Some groups also had ancestors from the Papuan regions.

Micronesian people live on two main types of islands. High-islanders live on islands with lots of resources. This group includes the Palauans, Chamorros, and Yapese. They can support larger groups of people on their land. Low-islanders live on small islands called atolls. The Marshallese and the Kiribati people belong to this group. Because their islands are small, they must be excellent sailors. They use advanced canoes to travel and find food.

Every island group has its own special way of life. The Chamorro people live in the Mariana Islands. Their language has words from Spanish because of history. The Chuukese people live in Chuuk State. In their culture, men work hard to protect their families. The Pohnpeians live on Pohnpei and had a very organized society. They even had five different tribes with their own chiefs. Each group keeps its own unique traditions and languages alive today.
