In China, Han people make up 91.11% of the population. In Taiwan, they make up 97% of the people. Many Han people also live in Southeast Asian countries. These places include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Because they are so many, they have shaped much of Chinese culture and history.

The history of the Han people began in a place called Zhongyuan. They come from the Huaxia people, who were groups of farmers. These tribes lived near the Yellow River in northern China.

Over many centuries, these people moved south into new lands. This happened during many different times in history. For example, people moved during the Qin and Han dynasties. These movements changed where people lived and how they grew food. Eventually, the Han became the main people living in the fertile south.

The name "Han" comes from the Han dynasty. This era is seen as a golden age in history. The Han dynasty was a very strong and unified empire. It was much like the Roman Empire in its size and power.

Because this dynasty was so famous, people began to call themselves "Han people." This name even spread to the language and the writing system. People call the Chinese script "Han characters" because of this. The word "Han" can even mean the Milky Way in old poems.

As the Han people moved, they formed many different subgroups. These groups are often known by the specific dialects they speak.

For instance, some people speak Cantonese or Hakka. Others speak Mandarin or Wu. These different ways of speaking helped identify different regional groups. Some people even use the name "Tangren" to describe themselves. This name comes from the Tang dynasty, which was another golden age. Many people in southern China used this name as they settled new lands.

Today, the Han Chinese identity is a very big and shared idea. It connects many people through a common history and culture.

Even though they live in many different countries, they share deep roots. Some people living far from China are called the diaspora. They might use special names like "Huaren" to show their heritage. This identity helps them stay connected to their ancient ancestors. It shows how a single group can grow and change over thousands of years.
