They are native to the region of Manchuria in Northeast Asia. Today, they are an officially recognized ethnic minority in China. The Manchu are actually the fourth-largest ethnic group in the country. They live in 31 different provincial regions across China. About half of the Manchu people live in Liaoning. Many others live in Hebei, Beijing, and Inner Mongolia.

Long ago, the Manchu were known as the Jurchen people.

These people were often settled farmers rather than nomads. They grew many different crops like soybeans, wheat, and rice. They also raised useful animals like oxen, pigs, and horses. Some Jurchen groups lived near the Songhua River. They even used skins from dogs and pigs to make warm coats. These farmers lived differently than the nomadic people on the steppes.

History shows that the Jurchen people were very active leaders. In the year 1114, a man named Wanyan Aguda united the tribes. He established the Jin dynasty, which ruled from 1115 to 1234. Later, the Manchus ruled two more important dynasties in China. These were the Later Jin and the Qing dynasties. The Qing dynasty ruled for a long time until 1912.

The name "Manchu" is a very interesting part of their story. In 1635, Emperor Hong Taiji chose this as the official name. This name replaced the older name, Jurchen. Some scholars think the name means "intrepid arrow." This comes from the words "man" for strong and "ju" for arrow. Other people think the name might come from a famous river.

A study in 2022 suggests it might mean the lower Amur River.

You can see the Manchu influence in many parts of life today. Their history is linked to many famous Chinese dynasties and leaders. For example, the Qianlong Emperor was a famous ruler of the Qing dynasty. He even wrote poems about the origins of the Manchu name.
