Today, this land is part of the Russian Far East. It includes places like Sakhalin island and the Amur Oblast. In the past, this region was part of Manchuria. It sat between the Stanovoy Range and the Pacific Coast. The land includes many rivers like the Amur and Ussuri. It is a place where many different histories meet.

Many different groups of people lived on this land for a long time. The Tungusic peoples lived there first. The Evenks are a group that still lives there today. They speak a language very similar to Manchu. Long ago, Han Chinese men moved there and married local women. Their children became a group known as the Taz people.

Some Korean families also lived in small villages to farm and raise cattle.

History shows that many empires ruled this area. The Tang dynasty built outposts here in the 7th century. Later, the Parhae people controlled the land. For a long time, the Mongol Empire and Chinese dynasties ruled too. Between 1643 and 1689, China and Russia argued over the borders. In 1689, they signed the Treaty of Nerchinsk to set a line. This line used the Argun River and the Stanovoy Mountains as borders.

Things changed in the mid-1800s during the Amur Annexation. Russia wanted to expand its reach into the Far East. In 1858, the Treaty of Aigun was signed. Then, in 1860, the Treaty of Peking was signed. These two treaties gave the land to the Russian Empire.

Because of this, the border moved to the Amur and Ussuri rivers. China lost its access to the Sea of Japan during this time.

Today, the names of places in this region tell stories of the past. You can still see Manchu names in places like the Sikhote-Alin mountains. Some people still study old documents like the Karakhan Manifestos from 1919. These papers were promises to return land to China. Modern leaders in Russia and China have worked to settle border questions. They signed new agreements in 2001 and 2004 to make peace. The history of Outer Manchuria remains a very important topic to study.
