It flows through parts of Russia and China. The river travels through Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krais in Russia. It also flows through Heilongjiang in Northeast China. This river starts in the Sikhote-Alin mountain range. It flows toward the north for a long time. Eventually, it joins the Amur river near the city of Khabarovsk.

Water moves through the Ussuri in many ways. Most of the water comes from rain. About 60% of the water comes from rain. Another 30% to 35% comes from melting snow. Some water also comes from springs under the ground. This water fills the large Ussuri basin. The river has an average discharge of 1,100 cubic meters per second. Its average elevation is 150 meters above sea level.

People have used many names for this river. In the Manchu language, the name means soot-black river. Manchu people also called it Usuri Ula. Another old name was Dobi Bira. This name means River of Foxes. In Mongolian, people called it the Üssüri Müren. The river has a history of big floods. These floods can be very large and hard on the land.

Many different things happen along the river's path. In November, the river freezes over. The ice stays on the water until April. Many kinds of fish live in the river. You can find grayling and sturgeon there. There are also humpback salmon, known as gorbusha. You can also find chum salmon, called keta.

History shows that the river is a special place. It forms part of the border between Russia and China. This border was set by a treaty in 1860. In 1945, Soviet forces crossed the river during Operation August Storm. In 1969, there was a border conflict at Damansky Island. Many smaller rivers flow into the Ussuri. These include the Arsenyevka, Sungacha, and Muling rivers. Other tributaries are the Bolshaya Ussurka, Bikin, Naoli, and Khor rivers.
