Many different things happen to keep the lake full. There are 24 rivers that flow into the lake. Most of these rivers come from Russia, but eight come from China. Only one river flows out of the lake. This is the Songacha River. It carries water to the Ussuri River and then to the Amur River system.

The water in the lake often looks cloudy. This happens because strong winds mix the water around. The lake is not very deep on average. Most of it is only about 2 meters deep.

People have known about this lake for a very long time. In the past, it was called the "Sea of bird feathers." This was because it had so many birds. Long ago, the fish from the lake were even served to emperors. Maps from the 1700s show the lake under different names. One map from 1706 calls it Himgon. Another map from 1739 calls it Lake Hinka. In 1868, a man named Nikolay Przhevalsky visited the area. He wrote about the plants and animals he saw there.
