It sits right next to the much larger Black Sea. A narrow path called the Kerch Strait connects the two.

Russia sits on the eastern side of the sea. Ukraine is located to the northwest and southwest. Because of its location, it is a very important route for travel. It helps connect Central Asia to other places via the Volga–Don Canal.

This sea is the shallowest sea in the whole world. The depth only changes between 2 and 14 meters.

Many large rivers like the Don and Kuban flow into it. These rivers carry sand, silt, and shells into the water. These deposits make the bottom of the sea very flat and smooth. Because so much fresh water flows in, the water is not very salty. This low salt level helps lots of green algae and plankton grow.

Because there is so much plankton, the sea is full of life. This creates a very high amount of fish productivity.

The shores are low and covered in thick green plants. You can also find many colonies of birds living along the coast.

These areas are very rich in nature and different kinds of living things.

People have given this sea many different names throughout history. In ancient times, some people called it the Maeotis Swamp. They thought it was a swamp because of the fresh water and marshes.
