The Caspian Sea is the largest body of inland water on our planet.

Some people call it a sea, while others call it a lake. It sits in a special place between the continents of Europe and Asia.

To the north and west lie Russia and Azerbaijan. To the south is Iran, and to the east are Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. It is a massive place that covers about 371,000 square kilometers.

This area is roughly the same size as the country of Japan.

The water in the Caspian Sea has a very interesting mix. It is not fresh like a river, but it is not as salty as the ocean. The salt level is about 1.2%, which is only one third of the salt found in regular seawater.

Most of this water comes from rivers flowing into it. The longest river in Europe, the Volga, brings in about 80% of the water at the shallow northern end. Other rivers like the Ural and the Kura also flow into the sea. Because no rivers flow out of the Caspian, the water only leaves through evaporation. This makes it a closed system.

This huge body of water has a very long history. Its name comes from the Caspi people who lived long ago.

These ancient people lived to the southwest of the sea. Some old maps even gave it different names, like the Hyrcanian Sea. The sea itself is very old, perhaps 30 million years old. It used to be part of a much larger ancient sea called the Paratethys. Over millions of years, the land moved and sea levels fell, leaving it landlocked.

The Caspian Sea is divided into three different zones. The northern part is very shallow, with an average depth of only 5 to 6 meters.

The middle part gets much deeper, reaching about 190 meters. The southern part is the deepest of all, with depths over 1,000 meters. In fact, the southern seabed is one of the lowest points on Earth that is not in an ocean.

The weather also changes depending on where you are. The north can be very cold and even freeze in the winter. The south is much warmer, with a climate more like the Mediterranean.

Many different things happen in the Caspian Sea today. It is a very important place for the oil and caviar industries.

However, the environment faces some hard jobs. Pollution from oil work and waste from rivers can hurt the water.

Scientists also worry about the water level. They think global warming and drying land might make the sea get much shallower. This could be a big problem for the many living things that call the Caspian home.
